Watatunga Opens for Winter Safari Tours

For the very first time, Watatunga Wildlife Reserve is opening its gates for Winter Safari Tours, offering visitors the chance to experience the reserve in a completely new light!
Normally, we close during the colder months, but this year we’re inviting guests to see the wilder side of winter. Where misty mornings, quiet wetlands and golden afternoon light reveal a whole new rhythm of life to the reserve. These special winter tours run for one weekend in December and one in January, with limited spaces available on each day.
A Peaceful, Immersive Experience
Winter at Watatunga feels like stepping into a wildlife wonderland. Frost clings to the grasses, the air is crisp, and the landscape takes on a serene stillness that’s entirely its own.
You’ll start your visit with a complimentary hot drink, before boarding one of our open-sided safari trailers for a 90-minute journey through the reserve’s transformed scenery. Even for those who’ve visited before, it’s an entirely different experience, with photographers often capturing some of their best shots during this time of year on our winter Dawn Photography tours.
Wildlife in a Different light
As temperatures drop and daylight shortens, the reserve’s residents adjust their behaviour. Deer and antelope often linger in open areas, birds gather in quieter corners, and the entire reserve moves at a gentler pace.
On your winter safari you will see several of our deer species in rut, as we have deer species in rut all year round due to the unique species that we have here at Watatunga. Animals also tend to be much more active during the day as temperatures plumet at night, meaning they are often utilising our lovely warm sheds! The bongo seem to be far more active during the day at this time of the year. As the ground is wet, you will routinely see their horns covered in mud, they love digging at this time of the year. The reserve looks beautifully untouched during the winter months, the calm serenity of the reserve in winter is unique. The animals are all very relaxed and tend to show much more reliably as we supplementary feed a lot more during the winter months, therefore they tend to follow the fresh haylage!
“In my opinion, nothing beats the reserve on a fresh, misty, winters morning.” – Molly, our Operations Manager
A Norfolk Wildlife Experience
Our trailer setup means guests can sit back, relax, and enjoy uninterrupted views of the wildlife and landscape. With open sides, every seat offers a panoramic perspective, from shimmering wetland reflections to the soft breath of deer on a frosty morning.
Each tour is led by one of our expert Watatunga guides, who’ll share insights into the animals’ seasonal behaviours, the reserve’s conservation work, and what makes winter such a special time to visit.
