A new partner – Nature’s Safe

by | May 3, 2024 | Watatunga Blog

We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Nature’s SAFE, a Whitchurch-based charity renowned for its innovative work in cryo-conservation. Together, we aim to significantly enhance our efforts to protect endangered deer, antelope, and bird species.

What is Nature’s Safe?

Nature’s SAFE stands at the forefront of cryoconservation, carefully preserving cells and tissues of threatened wildlife species to ensure genetic diversity for future generations.

Their collaboration with European zoos and wildlife rescue centres provides invaluable resources for maintaining and boosting vulnerable animal populations.

A Shared Vision

Spanning 170 acres, Watatunga is a haven for threatened deer, antelope, and bird species where captive species exist in as natural a habitat as we can create. With Nature’s SAFE, we have found a partner working on a very different aspect of the whole conservation picture, extremely technical and lab focussed. Together, we will be able to amplify our efforts to further protect the future of some of our most criticaly endangered species.

Why is this needed?

“Human activity is causing the sixth mass extinction, the largest predicted loss of biodiversity in 65 million years.”  With over a million species at risk of extinction – many due to be lost within our lifetime – such an immense shift in ecosystems threatens the natural balance of our planet.

To be clear, restoring a species from extinction through reproductive science and cryobiology is nobody’s idea of a first choice option when it comes to conservation, but for some of the species we have onsite at Watatunga, there is no longer the luxury of time – it will soon be too late to change direction.

Nature’s SAFE provides a path to a more hopeful future for us all by saving animals from extinction and halting biodiversity loss.

Strngthening Conservation through Collaboration

Molly Ruder our Reserve Manager comments: “We are extremely excited to be partnering with Nature’s SAFE and their unique approach to conservation. We hope to provide samples for endangered deer and antelope from all over the world for years to come.”

Tullis Matson, Founder and Chair of Nature’s SAFE, adds, “It is fantastic to have Watatunga Wildlife Reserve on board. Their conservation work is of huge importance for incredibly special deer, antelope, and bird species, and we are delighted to be able to support this exciting project.”

The Road Ahead

This partnership is a tiny cog in a huge wheel, but it exemplifies the importance of a whole-system approach to conservation whereby habitat management, education, legislation and the incredible work of international conservation organisations remain of vital importance.
