Red Crowned Crane
(Grus japonensis)
The red crowned crane, also called the Manchurian crane, is the second largest, and among the rarest cranes in the world. It inhabits wetlands, marshes and riverine meadows across its range, which spans parts of China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. In some regions, it is revered as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.
Threats to species:
Wetland drainage, agricultural expansion and industrial development have led to significant habitat loss. Many of its breeding and wintering grounds are subject to ongoing degradation, placing further pressure on the species’ survival.
